So FIRST about the NAME...
Page 16 of the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous states that "an alcoholic in his [or her] cups is an UNLOVELY CREATURE.' This description is memorable in its absurdity. It draws a caricature of the suffering alcoholic, transformed into something gross and inhuman... and... unlovely? Such a ridiculous word for a monster. Even so, we in recovery can find humor in the darkest of things. And we laugh: OH, isn't it just GRAND to be lovely once more? Aren't we the epitome of grace? So beautiful in our humanity?
WE ARE NOT reformed monsters. We are resilient human beings who wake up every day to battle a monster of a disease. Some days we suffer defeats. But we summon the courage to rise up and fight another day. And today, everywhere, more and more of us are winning. And as our recovery gains momentum, that nagging creature fades to memory. We have earned our serenity. And our LOVELINESS astounds!
At MRC's Walk for Recovery, our team will celebrate our victories alongside a community of fighters. It is an excellent opportunity for our community to SEE that recovery is not only possible - it's happening right in front of them. We will walk with intention, carrying with us our stories of hope, love, and purpose. We walk as proof that people in recovery are not only surviving, WE ARE THRIVING. We walk to to tell you we're better for our struggles. Because we are survivors, we know that life is a gift. We are grateful for simple things many take for granted. We are joyful just to be alive and well. We walk... because we've earned it!!
